What does Islam say about destiny and fate?

MF Rahman

Title: Bait-ul-Nikaah

Dear Brother,

Salaams.

The Quran does mention choice and it also mentions absolute destiny.

As a consequence, one may conclude that our choices are destined.

And that is easy for Allah. “When he wishes a thing he says of it ‘Be’ and it becomes.” Thus our choices are real because he says they are. Similarly for destiny.

Faisal.

Salaam all

Be careful.

This is one interpretation of Qadar (fate/destiny) in Islam, but it

does not successfully explain how the Qur'an can assure us that we

have CHOICE.

Which it does, in many, many ayah.

We will likely never know the full understanding of the destiny vs.

choice paradox while in this life but you can be sure that Allah does

NOT create an individual specific conscious living human being

KNOWING that his or her only possible fate is the Hellfire.

Remember al-Anam 6:54 (http://www.IslamAwakened.com/6:54)

When those come to thee who believe in Our signs, Say:

"Peace be on you: Your Lord hath inscribed for Himself

(the rule of) mercy: verily, if any of you did evil in ignorance,

and thereafter repented, and amend (his conduct), lo! He is

  Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Creating someone just for eternal torture is NOT mercy, by any

definition, therefore the orthodox concept of Qadar cannot be correct.

If one ayat is not enough, see 6:12 also

Say: "To whom belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth?"

Say: "To Allah. He hath inscribed for Himself (the rule of) Mercy.

That He will gather you together for the Day of Judgment, there is

no doubt whatever. It is they who have lost their own souls, that

will not believe.

It is not given to man to understand Allah beyond what He Himself

tells us.

And what He has told us includes 6:12 and 6:54.

How does islam view destiny and fate ?

  Answer:

 Praise be to Allaah.

Belief in destiny and fate is one of the basic beliefs of Islam. It means that Allaah is the Knower of all things and the Creator of all things; nothing exists outside of His will and decree. He wrote down all things with Him in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Preserved Tablet), and this was fifty thousand years before He created the universe. Everything in the universe, every creature and the things it does, is the creation of Allaah. Whatever He wills happens, and whatever He does not will does not happen. If something happens to a person, it could not have missed him, and if something does not happen to him, it could not have happened to him. A person is not forced to obey or disobey Allaah _ he has free will as befits his state, but it is subject to the will of the Creator. And Allaah knows best.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}

(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."

[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
