Khutbah on Knowledge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Delivered in Aldana street Masjid 03/04/09 by Myself (Musa Millington)

Indeed all the praises is due to Allah, we praise him and we seek his assistance and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds, whoever Allah guides there is none that can misguide him and whoever is leads astray there is none that can guide him, and I bear witness there is no God other than Allah, He has no partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and messenger.

O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared. And die not except in a state of Islam. {Al-Imran:102}

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allâh is Ever an All Watcher over you. {An-Nisa':1}

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth.He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (SAW) he has indeed achieved a great achievement. {Al-Ahzaab:70&71}]

For verily the best of speech is the book of Allah and the best of guidance is the guidance of the Messenger . And beware of newly invented matters for every newly invented matter is a Bid'ah and every Bid'ah is misguidance and all misguidance is in the hellfire.

Oh people, fear Allah and he will teach you what you don't know. For verily this knowledge, knowledge of the Shari'ah is the most virtuous of knowledge, it is better than all the secular knowledge which people run after. How can it not be the most virtuous of all types of knowledge when our Lord has said: "Allah has borne witness that there is nothing worthy of worship but him and the angels and the people of knowledge, he maintains his creation with justice, there is nothing worthy of worship but him the all powerful the all wise." And he said in his book also: "Allah raises those who believe amongst you those who have knowledge in levels." And he has ordered his Prophet  to seek increase in it. Allah has said: "Say (o Muhammad) my Lord increase me in knowledge."

Yes, and whomsoever Allah wants good for he does not give him wealth or authority rather he gives him beneficial knowledge. Imam Al Bukhari has narrated in his Saheeh on the authority of Mu'aawiyah  who said I heard the Messenger  say: "Whomsoever Allah wants good for he makes him understand the religion." What is better than knowing your Lord, knowing his attributes and actions, and his rights upon us and our rights upon him. And what is better than knowing the religion of Islam by which we worship Allah, and knowing what Allah has made lawful and unlawful. And also what is better than knowing the Messenger , the Messenger that was sent to all of mankind as a warner and giver of glad tidings. For whomsoever follows him has been guided and whomsoever opposes him is misguided.

He  has also said in a Hadeeth narrated in Saheeh Al Bukhari: "The Ulama are the inheritors of the Prophets, for the Prophets didn't leave a Deenar or a Dirham, rather they left knowledge as inheritance, and whomsoever takes hold of it he has taken hold of something great." By Allah, many of us await the death of our parents in order to inherit their money and wealth. Rather we may even compete for this and kill each other for it. But knowledge has more value than this. Hence, why don't we seek to learn Islam in the Masjid. And why don't we try to read the Qur'an and the Ahadeeth of the Messenger  and work hard to understand both? And verily this knowledge is easy for whomsoever Allah makes it easy for. Allah said: "And we have made the Qur'an easy to remember, is there anyone who will remember it?"

And the Messenger  said: "The world and what is within it is cursed except for the rememberance of Allah and what is like it. A scholar and a student." Listen Oh people. Our Prophet  , the one who didn't speak from his desires but rather by revelation. The one who fulfilled his trust, advised the Ummah and struggled for Allah a true struggle has informed us that the World and what is within it is cursed, all of it. For verily when a man strives for nobility or authority or land and other than this his striving is in futility and misguidance. For verily many waste their time and their lives chasing behind this world with it and what is within it being cursed. And as for the one who spends his time seeking beneficial knowledge and good deeds then Allah doesn't render futile the actions of those who do good.

And know Oh Muslims that this knowledge is the religion. It is that which guides to the straight path and saves us from the path of those who have earned Allah's wrath and those who are astray. As for those who have earned Allah's wrath then they are the Jews who were given knowledge but it didn't benefit them. And as for the ones who are astray they are the Christians who act without knowledge. For it is upon us Oh Muslims to act upon our knowledge. For knowledge is like a tree and actions are like the fruit. And there is no use for a tree that bears no fruit.

Second Khutbah:

In a Hadeeth narrated in Sunan Tirmidhi the Prophet  said: Whomsoever goes upon a way seeking knowledge Allah will make it easy for him to go to the paradise. And a people do not congregate in a house from the houses of Allah to read the book of Allah and learn it between themselves except that peace descends upon them, mercy encompasses them, the angels cover them and Allah remembers them with those who are in his company."

For whomsoever wishes to enter Jannah easily then it is upon him to seek knowledge, And whomsoever wants that peace descends upon him, and it is something that many try to find but they are unable to find it, upon him is knowledge, and if one wishes for Allah's mercy then upon him is knowledge, and whomsoever wants to be in the company of the angels then upon him is knowledge, and whomsoever wishes that Allah mentions him in his company then upon him is knowledge and the circles of knowledge in the Masjid.

And beware, beware of turning away from knowledge and the circles of knowledge. Allah has said: And whomsoever turns away from my remember then he has a life of sadness and we bring him out on the day of judgement blind." And Allah said: "And who is more oppresive than the one who is reminded about the signs of Allah and turns away from it." For verily turning away from knowledge blinds the hearts that are within the chests. And it brings about sadness for him in the Dunya and the Aakhira. It also destroys him and drowns him in the darknesses of Shirk, innovation and sin. For how many have turned away from knowledge and they are unable to keep away from these three things? We ask why is it that they cannot have safety from these things? It is because they deserve the anger of Allah by leaving their religion (which is knowledge).

And Imam Al Bukhari has narrated that the Prophet  saw three people who came to his talk. One of them saw a space then sat, the other sat behind the circle and the last one turned away. Then the Prophet  said: "Should I give you news about these three, as for the first he leaned to Allah so Allah leaned to him, as for the second he was shy so Allah was shy from him and as for the third he turned away therefore Allah turned away from him."

Alhamdu Lillah.

Verily Da’wah As Salafeeyah and the men of the Sunnah are one row in Da’wah, Worship and manners. Hence whomsoever intends to divide this row must be clarified (to the people) that he is one who divides (the rows of the Salafis). And the greatest thing that one enjoys in the Dunya is brotherhood, love, and care (for each other), and everyone loves for his brother what he loves for himself and if this does not occur the result is widespread trials and mischief.
